Advanced technology is the field of medical science offers a solution to men who battle with erectile dysfunction (ED). The solution, which is the use of penile prosthesis may seem a bit invasive, but for those who have tried oral and injection treatment and failed, it can be the direct route to an active sex life once again. A penile implants can also be used to correct cases of scarring on the penis during reconstruction after an injury to the genitals. At Moorgate Urology most cases are for those who do not wish to take medication or self inject, or they have had little or no response with these options
Structural Overview of the Prosthesis
Structurally, the penile implant surgery involves the introduction of a device into the penis that will aid with erection during sexual intercourse. These devices can be either a bendable rod or two tubes. The bendable option just offers a simple solution to ED while the tubes bring an advanced surgical solution. Whichever implant the patient might choose, the doctor will ensure that the penis still has other capacities (sensation of touch, and ability to urinate and ejaculate) fully functional. Therefore, fibrous tissues, certain muscles, blood veins, arteries, and nerves will still be functional.
What Option Are Available?
Penile prosthesis come in two main types – inflatable or malleable implants. The latter is the simplest type of prosthesis that involves the use of a malleable rod while the other is a more advanced option.
Malleable (bendable) penile implant
this option involves the insertion of a pair of rods into the corpora cavernosa of the penis. While a malleable penile prosthesis is a simple option that will help with erection, it offer a relatively fix status of erection. The penis might not be completely stiff, but it will be hard enough to allow for penetration during intercourse, with is a factor to consider when opting for the malleable penis. The other drawback is the fact that the implant does not change the length or width of the penis. The patient will have to adjust manually the penis into position by tilting and bending the penis and, therefore, the implanted rods.
Inflatable penile implant
this option involves the insertion of two tube or cylinders into the penis. The implant comprises of tubes made from an artificial material that expands to give the penis more length and width while making it have a firm erection. The other feature is a chamber that contains a fluid that is used to inflate the tubes to make the penis erect, and two small pumps inserted into the scrotum. The patient will squeeze the pumps to fill and empty the tubes. An inflatable penis offers are more natural look giving the penis the ability to stay flaccid like it normally would on the erection is what will be done manually.
The Risks of Penile Implant Surgery
As is with any surgery, the risk of possible complication cannot be overlooked, some of the notable complication that can arise include scarring and infection after the surgery, mechanical failure, or erosion of the tissue around the implant. Nevertheless, most patients that have has a penile implant say it works though it may not give a completely hard erection or a fuller length as expected, but it suffices. Research shows that around 85% of all men who have had the implants are satisfied with the results, with around 92% of them having the inflatable prosthesis.
